From September 20 to 23, 2024, IPADES, represented by Alex Aguirre, associate researcher and official civil society delegate, participated in the UN Future Summit and Action Days in New York. This event brought together global leaders and organizations to discuss solutions for emerging challenges in peace, security, human rights, and sustainable development.

Key Demands on the Crisis in Nicaragua

IPADES presented a set of priority demands to the UN and various diplomatic missions, focusing on the severe human rights crisis in Nicaragua. These included:

  • Condemnation of Repression: IPADES reported on Nicaragua’s state repression, with over 350 documented killings since 2018 and thousands of forced exiles.
  • Increased International Pressure: The organization called for additional sanctions, greater diplomatic isolation for the regime, and enhanced protection for human rights defenders.
  • Support for Free Elections: IPADES demanded the organization of internationally supervised elections as an essential step toward restoring democracy in Nicaragua.

Participation in the Peace and Security Dialogue

Aguirre took part in the Interactive Dialogue on Peace and Security at the UN General Assembly, where he emphasized the impact of authoritarian regimes on global stability, citing Nicaragua as a prime example. Aguirre proposed the creation of an International Contact Group to mediate the crisis, underscoring the need for a multilateral effort to achieve a peaceful democratic transition.

Bilateral Meetings and International Collaboration

During the summit, IPADES held meetings with delegations from the United States, Argentina, Costa Rica, and Chile, securing commitments to coordinate sanctions and expand cooperation in multilateral forums.
