IPADES, in collaboration with the Fundación para la Libertad, the Center for Governance and Democracy Studies, the Foundation for Development and Social Innovation, and FIU Libraries, organized a commemorative event for the fifth anniversary of the April Rebellion. This event took place at the Doral Cultural Arts Center in Florida on April 15 and 16, 2023, bringing together academics, activists, journalists, and community members in a space for reflection and dialogue on human rights and freedom in Nicaragua.

Panels and Conferences

Throughout the event, various panels and conferences were held with the participation of prominent figures. Topics included “The Dictatorial System in the Americas,” “The Flight of Freedom: The Release of the 222,” and “Journalism in Resistance.” Panelists, including Yubrank Suazo, Medardo Mairena, Roger Reyes, and Berta Valle, discussed the current situation in Nicaragua and the role of civil resistance in the struggle for democracy and human rights.

Broadcast Program

On April 16, 2023, attendees had the opportunity to enjoy a series of documentary screenings, such as Duele Respirar, Libertad Exiliada, and Exiliada. These films addressed the suffering of the regime’s victims and the exile resulting from political repression. The screenings and testimonies provided a glimpse into the harsh reality faced by thousands of Nicaraguans, emphasizing the importance of keeping memory and solidarity alive in difficult times.

Live Broadcast

For those unable to attend in person, the event was broadcast live on Facebook, allowing more people around the world to join this commemoration and unite in the call for justice and freedom.

With this initiative, IPADES reaffirms its commitment to defending human rights and promoting a culture of peace and freedom for Nicaragua and all of Latin America.
